Your First Massage

So, you've decided to go for your first massage treatment. You're in for a treat! What should you expect?

It's not unusual for folks to be nervous about their first massage. The whole experience is entirely new. It's OK to be nervous and unsure. Ask your therapist what to expect - let them ease your concerns. Good body workers genuinely want to help you feel better, and that cannot happen if you do not feel comfortable. Do you want the whole session spent on your low back? Let them know. This time is entirely for you. In this day and age, it's a rare gift for another to spend time completely focused on you. So when booking the massage, know that you're taking time for yourself.

What do you want out of the session? Every massage is unique - both the client's and the therapist's experience is different for each massage. Most massage therapists, left to their own intuition and skills, will blend the massage into a treatment that is specifically suited just for you.

How much clothing?

This depends on your area of focus and the modality/specialty that you're receiving. Thai, shiatsu and energy work are typically done fully clothed. Most other modalities require work on skin. For example, if you have shoulder pain, the therapist may need to work on your shoulder blades, which may be difficult if you're wearing a shirt/bra. However, your comfort is also a main concern, and you should only undress to your level of comfort. Talking to your therapist or body worker about your concerns is also recommended.

During the session

Let the therapist know if the session is not meeting your needs. Too much pressure? Not enough pressure? Let them know.
